What size bundt cake pan fits in an Instant Pot?
Bundt pans, also called tube pans, come in a number of sizes. The bundt pan you use for your cake needs to fit in your Instant Pot, but it also needs to be encased in a trivet and sling. The trivet will keep the cake pan off the bottom of the Instant Pot, which helps it cook more evenly, and the sling provides you with an easy way to remove the pan. Otherwise, it would be very difficult to get out of the bottom of the Instant Pot, especially if it’s hot.
If you have a 5-8 qt Instant Pot, you should be able to fit a 6-inch or 7-inch bundt pan inside.
What is the cake setting on the Instant Pot?
The cake setting on your Instant Pot doesn’t bake a cake the same way an oven does. An oven uses dry heat to cook the ingredients. The Instant Pot cooks baked goods the same way it cooks all other foods: by using steam. Your Instant Pot will heat the water in the bottom of the Instant Pot and turn it into steam. That steam will heat the entire inside pot to a temperature that will cook the cake.
For this recipe, however, we can simply use the high-pressure setting. We don’t need to use the cake setting.
How else can I decorate this cake?
This rainbow cake is very pretty. The Instant Pot helps reserve the colors better than the oven, so you can serve this alongside white icing for a beautiful contrast. Here are some ideas to help create a themed cake for holidays or special occasions:
- 4th of July – Use a white or vanilla cake mix with red and blue food coloring to make a red, white, and blue cake.
- Birthday Cake – Use a Funfetti cake mix or top the white frosting with brightly colored sprinkles.
- Christmas – Use a white or vanilla cake mix with green and red food coloring to make a fun holiday cake.
- Easter – Use a white or vanilla cake mix with purple and yellow food coloring for a fun spring-themed surprise.
- Valentine’s Day – Color the entire vanilla cake pink or red.

How to Make Instant Pot Bundt Cake
STEP ONE: Mix the cake batter. In a large bowl, mix together the cake mix, eggs, water, and oil. Divide the batter between 6 small bowls. Mix a few drops of the food coloring into each of the bowls. Stir.
STEP TWO: Prep the pan and layer the cake. Grease a 7-inch bundt pan with nonstick cooking spray. Scoop small amounts of each of the colors of batter into the bundt pan until all batter is used.
STEP THREE: Prep the instant pot and cover the cake. Add 1 cup of water to the inner bowl of the Instant Pot. Place the trivet inside. Make a foil sling by folding tin foil into a strip, then place it under the cake pan. Carefully lower the cake pan on top of the trivet in the Instant Pot. Loosely fold the foil sling over the top of the bundt pan. Close the lid and turn the valve to sealing.
STEP FOUR: Cook. Cook on high pressure for 35 minutes. Once the time is up do a quick pressure release. Let the cake cool on a cooling rack for 30-60 minutes. Use a knife to gently separate the cake from the sides of the bundt pan and turn the cake onto a plate.
STEP FIVE: Frost and serve. Frost as desired and top with crushed Magic Spoon Fruity cereal and fill the center with additional cereal if desired.
Tips for Baking a Bundt Cake in the Instant Pot
- Grease your pan well. You can use cooking spray, but make sure you get all the edges of your bundt pan. You can also use butter and flour if you prefer.
- If you’re using a smaller bundt pan, it’s ok not to use all the batter. Fill the pan to about 2/3 full to give the batter room to expand during the cooking process. You may have to reduce the cooking time by 5 minutes or so.
- Most bundt pans are coated with a non-stick surface to help your cake come out of the pan more easily. To preserve the coating, wash your cake pan simply with hot water, dish soap, and a cloth. Don’t use a harsh abrasive or any kind of rough scrubber that might scratch the surface.
Storage and Freezing
To store this cake, allow it to cool to room temperature, then decorate it if you prefer. Wrap the cake in foil or plastic wrap, then keep it in the fridge for up to 1 week. Depending on what frosting you use, you may need to reduce the storage time.
You can also freeze this cake. Wrap the cake in plastic wrap, then in foil. Finally, place it inside an airtight container or Ziploc bag and freeze it for up to 3 months.
FAQs
Yes! You can use any cake mix you prefer to make this bundt cake.
No, you can use any kind of cake mix you’d like.
Yes, you need to cover your cake. This is because the Instant Pot is generating steam, and that steam is building up inside the Instant Pot. It will rise to the top and eventually drip down onto the cake. If you don’t cover it, those water drops will mix with your cake batter. Covering your cake with foil helps ensure the water won’t affect your cake.
